About Museum of Brands
The Museum of Brands sits just off Portobello Road in Notting Hill, and it tells the story of consumer culture through the everyday objects people actually bought, used, and threw away. The core of it is the Robert Opie collection, a vast archive of packaging, advertising, toys, and household goods assembled over decades. The permanent walk-through, often called the Time Tunnel, runs chronologically from the Victorian era to the present, so you move past old biscuit tins, wartime rationing labels, mid-century sweet wrappers, and brands you probably grew up with, right up to recent packaging you'd recognise from the supermarket shelf.
What makes the place work is the recognition factor. Rather than grand design statements, you see how familiar logos, mascots, and chocolate bars changed shape over the years, and how advertising reflected the social attitudes of each decade. There's a garden at the back and a small shop, and the museum runs temporary exhibitions alongside the main collection, so the content shifts a little depending on when you visit. It's compact compared to London's bigger institutions, which makes it an easy addition to a Notting Hill day rather than a whole-day commitment on its own.
Entry is ticketed, and booking ahead is sensible at weekends when Portobello Market draws crowds to the area. The museum is a short walk from Ladbroke Grove and Notting Hill Gate Underground stations. Most people spend somewhere between an hour and 90 minutes inside, longer if you stop to read the labels and chase the nostalgia. Opening days and hours do change, so it's worth checking current visiting arrangements before you go, especially if you're building it around market day.
