About Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle sits on a bend of the River Avon in the Warwickshire town of Warwick, roughly between London and Birmingham. There has been a fortification here since 1068, when William the Conqueror raised an earthwork motte, and the stone castle that grew around it over the following centuries became one of England's most complete medieval strongholds. Much of what you see today, the towering Caesar's Tower, Guy's Tower, the gatehouse and curtain walls, dates from a 14th-century rebuild, while the state rooms inside were later turned into a grand country residence. The combination is the point: a serious military castle on the outside, with furnished interiors and landscaped grounds that reflect its long second life as a stately home.

The site works more like a day-out attraction than a quiet historic monument. Alongside the ramparts and towers, the grounds host regular shows and set-piece events through the day, things like birds of prey displays, longbow and jousting demonstrations, and a working trebuchet, one of the largest siege machines of its kind. Below the castle, the Gaol and themed walk-throughs lean into the darker, more theatrical side of its history. The gardens, laid out in part by Capability Brown, give you space to slow down, and the top of the towers rewards the climb up the spiral stairs with wide views over the town and river.

Plan on the better part of a day if you want to see the towers, the interiors and catch a couple of the live shows, since the event timings are staggered rather than continuous. Entry is paid, and some seasonal extras such as the Castle Dungeon or special events may need a separate ticket, so it's worth checking what's included before you go. The castle is busiest in school holidays and over summer weekends. Warwick itself has a mainline rail station within walking distance, which makes a day trip from London straightforward, and there is on-site parking for those driving.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I spend at Warwick Castle?
Allow most of a day if you want to combine the towers and ramparts, the state rooms, the grounds and a few of the live shows. The daily displays such as birds of prey, jousting and the trebuchet run at set times through the day, so it pays to check the schedule on arrival and build your visit around them.
Is everything included in the standard ticket?
The main castle, grounds and most daytime shows are usually covered by general entry, but some extras like the Castle Dungeon and certain seasonal or special events can require a separate ticket. Entry is paid, and it's worth confirming exactly what your ticket includes before you book.
Can I get to Warwick Castle from London for a day trip?
Yes. Warwick has a mainline railway station a short walk from the castle, so a day trip from London is practical. If you drive instead, there is parking on site, though it can fill up quickly during school holidays and summer weekends.
Is Warwick Castle suitable for families with children?
It's one of the more family-oriented castles in England, with costumed shows, the trebuchet firing, birds of prey displays and walk-through attractions aimed at keeping younger visitors engaged. Note that the towers involve steep, narrow spiral staircases, which can be tricky for very small children, strollers and anyone with mobility concerns.
