About Parc zoologique de Paris
Parc zoologique de Paris sits on the eastern edge of the city, near the Bois de Vincennes in the 12th arrondissement. It first opened in 1934 and reopened in 2014 after a complete, multi-year rebuild that scrapped the old cage-and-bar layout. What you see now is organized into five biozones, each standing in for a different part of the world: Patagonia, the Sahel-Sudan region, Europe, Guyana (the Amazon), and Madagascar. Animals live in large landscaped habitats grouped by region rather than by species, so a single walk takes you from South American pumas and pampas to African lions, giraffes, and rhinos.
The one landmark that survived from the original zoo is the Grand Rocher, a tall artificial rock that has become a symbol of the park and is visible from well beyond the grounds. The Madagascar zone includes a large tropical greenhouse kept warm and humid year-round, home to lemurs, reptiles, and free-flying birds, which makes it a reliable stop on a cold or wet day. A fixed walking route guides you through the biozones in order, and the full loop covers a fair bit of ground, so comfortable shoes help.
Plan on roughly half a day to do the park justice, more if you are visiting with children who want to linger at the feedings and keeper talks. Entry is a separate, paid ticket, and booking ahead is sensible during French school holidays and on warm weekends, when queues at the gate build up. The zoo is easy to reach by Metro and sits close enough to the Bois de Vincennes and the Chateau de Vincennes to pair with a longer day outdoors in eastern Paris.
