Planning Your Louvre Visit: Hours, Entrances & Getting There
The Louvre sits in central Paris and is easy to reach by public transport. The simplest route is the metro to Palais-Royal – Musee du Louvre on lines 1 and 7; several bus lines stop nearby, and the museum is within walking distance of many central sights. Which entrance you pick matters. The glass Pyramid is the main entrance but splits into separate lines for ticket holders, visitors without tickets, and priority access, so it gets busy. The Carrousel du Louvre entrance, reached through the underground shopping mall, is open to ticket and pass holders and tends to be quieter. Richelieu Passage is for groups and members, while Porte des Lions (currently closed) is online-ticket only and has no lockers.
The Louvre is open every day except Tuesday, from 09:00 to 18:00 on Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, and from 09:00 to 21:00 on Wednesday and Friday. Last entry is one hour before closing, and the rooms clear 30 minutes before. The museum is closed January 1, May 1, and December 25; on other public holidays it stays open unless the holiday lands on a Tuesday. The outdoor courtyards keep their own hours, with the Cour Napoleon open daily 07:30 to 21:00 and the Cour Carree 07:30 to 19:45. If you're planning an evening visit or coming on a holiday, double-check the day's hours before you go.
