About this tour

This small-group guided tour pairs timed, skip-the-line entry to the Louvre with an expert guide who walks you through the collections over two to three hours. You'll see the headliners, Leonardo's Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the ornate Galerie d'Apollon, along with Egyptian antiquities and major works of French painting. Groups run small, and you'll get a headset where the setting calls for it. Guiding is in English, French, Spanish or German depending on the option you choose.

Highlights

  • See Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the single most famous painting in the collection.
  • Pass beneath the glass pyramid that marks the Louvre's main entrance and modern emblem.
  • Take in Egyptian antiquities spanning thousands of years, from statues and reliefs to everyday artifacts.
  • Stand before the Venus de Milo, one of the great surviving works of ancient Greek sculpture.
  • Walk the gilded Galerie d'Apollon, famous for its painted ceiling and royal decoration.
  • See landmarks of French painting, including Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People.

Good to Know: Getting There, Entrances and Opening Hours

Your guide leads the group through timed entry, so plan on the museum itself taking roughly two to three hours. Since the Louvre is enormous and impossible to see in one go, the tour focuses on the works that matter most: the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, the Galerie d'Apollon and standout pieces across the Egyptian, Greek and Roman, and French painting collections, set within the museum's grand historic halls.

The Louvre sits in central Paris and is easy to reach on public transport. The simplest route is the Métro to Palais-Royal, Musée du Louvre on lines 1 and 7, and several bus lines stop close by. There are a few different entrances: the glass Pyramid is the main one and usually the busiest, while the Carrousel du Louvre entrance through the underground mall tends to be calmer. The Richelieu Passage is kept for groups and members, and the Porte des Lions is online-ticket only when it is open (currently closed).

The museum opens every day except Tuesday. Hours run 09:00 to 18:00 on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and 09:00 to 21:00 on Wednesday and Friday, with last entry one hour before closing and rooms clearing 30 minutes before. It is closed on January 1, May 1 and December 25; on other public holidays it stays open unless the day falls on a Tuesday. The outdoor courtyards keep their own hours, with the Cour Napoléon open daily 07:30 to 21:00 and the Cour Carrée 07:30 to 19:45. It is worth double-checking times before an evening or holiday visit.

What was stolen from the Louvre?
On October 19, 2025, thieves broke into the Galerie d'Apollon and took eight 19th-century items of the French Crown Jewels, including tiaras, necklaces and earrings once worn by imperial and royal family members. A crown belonging to Empress Eugénie was dropped and recovered nearby, but the rest remain missing. The daylight heist lasted only minutes and exposed serious security gaps.
What was the Louvre before it was a museum?
It started as a medieval fortress in the late 12th century, then served as a royal palace before becoming a public museum after the French Revolution.
When was the Louvre built?
The original fortress was built in 1190 under King Philip II. It opened as a museum in 1793.
How do you pronounce "Louvre"?

Why can't you see the whole Louvre in one visit?
The collection is one of the largest in the world and spreads across a huge complex, so most visitors choose a few wings and accept they'll miss the rest.
What is the glass pyramid at the Louvre?
Added in 1989 in the central courtyard, the glass pyramid marks the museum's main entrance and has become nearly as recognizable as the art inside.
Is the Mona Lisa room crowded?
Yes, the Mona Lisa draws the biggest crowds in the museum and its room can get packed, which is why some tickets include a host who takes you straight to it before you explore on your own.
