Visiting the Museum: What to See, Hours, and Getting There
The Musée Marmottan Monet occupies a former hunting lodge in Paris's residential 16th arrondissement, which gives a visit the feel of walking through a grand private home rather than a large public gallery. You'll enter through Paul Marmottan's original collection, with First Empire furniture, sculptures, and a set of medieval illuminated manuscripts spread across the ground and first floors. The real draw is the purpose-built basement gallery, where the Monet holdings are kept, including Impression, Sunrise, the late water lilies from his garden at Giverny, and a run of portraits and landscapes. Upstairs you'll also find a substantial group of works by Berthe Morisot, one of the few women among the early Impressionists, plus pieces by Degas, Renoir, and Pissarro. Most people spend around 1.5 to 2.5 hours here.
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with a late closing on Thursdays until 21:00. It's closed on Mondays, 1 May, and 25 December, and last entry is about 30 minutes before closing. Hours can shift for special exhibitions and public holidays, so it's worth checking the current schedule before you go. To get there, take Metro Line 9 to La Muette (about a 5-minute walk) or Line 6 to Ranelagh; buses 22, 32, 52, 63, and 72 stop nearby. There's no dress code, but comfortable shoes help since you'll be on your feet moving through the galleries.
