About Red Valley Park
Red Valley Park sits just outside Ortahisar and Urgup in the heart of Cappadocia, in Turkiye's Nevsehir province. The name comes from the rock itself, which glows in shades of red, pink, and orange when the low sun hits it. That coloring comes from iron and other minerals in the soft volcanic tuff, the same rock that erosion has carved into the ridges, hollows, and fairy chimneys the region is known for. It's one of the areas usually folded into a classic Red Tour, the standard loop that also takes in the Goreme Open Air Museum and the fairy chimneys at Pasabag.
The valley is best known for walking and for its light. Trails wind between the rose-colored cliffs and connect Red Valley with the neighboring Rose Valley, and the two are often talked about together because they blend into each other on the ground. Tucked into the rock along the way are old cave churches cut by early Christian communities, some still showing traces of frescoes, so the walk is part landscape and part history. Late afternoon into sunset is the classic time to be here, when the rock turns its deepest red, which is why so many tours schedule the viewpoint for the end of the day.
If you're coming with a guided Red Tour, transport and the route are handled for you, and many trips pair the day with an early sunrise balloon-watching stop, since Cappadocia's balloons fly at dawn rather than dusk. Independent visitors should bring proper shoes, water, and sun cover, because the terrain is uneven and shade is scarce. Some of the trails involve narrow paths and short scrambles, so it helps to know your comfort level before setting off. Small cafes and tea spots appear at a few of the higher viewpoints in season.
