About Rose Valley
Rose Valley sits just outside Goreme in the heart of Cappadocia, and it gets its name from the pinkish, rose-tinted rock that glows warm at sunrise and sunset. The valley is a maze of soft volcanic tuff that wind and water have carved into ridges, folds, and the tall cone-shaped rock towers the region is known for, usually called fairy chimneys. Cut into the cliff faces you'll find old rock-hewn churches and dwellings, some with faded frescoes still visible, left behind by the Byzantine-era Christian communities who once lived and worshipped here.
The main way people see Rose Valley is on foot or on horseback. Walking trails link it with neighboring valleys, and it often gets paired with the adjoining Red Valley, since the two run into each other and share that same reddish-pink stone. Horseback rides through the area are common too, following quiet trails past the fairy chimneys and threading between Rose Valley and nearby valleys like Kiliclar, Meskendir, and Love. The word Cappadocia itself is sometimes traced to an old term meaning "land of beautiful horses," so seeing it from the saddle has a certain logic to it.
Timing matters more here than at most places. The rock takes on its strongest color in the hour around sunrise and sunset, which is also when the light is kindest for photos and the heat is bearable in summer. Early morning has the added bonus of hot air balloons drifting overhead, a near-daily sight in good weather. The trails are unpaved and uneven in spots, so wear proper shoes and bring water, as there's little shade and few facilities once you're inside the valley. There's no ticket gate for the valley itself, though guided walks, horseback rides, and transport are things most visitors arrange in advance.
