About Grand Canyon West
Grand Canyon West sits on the Hualapai Reservation at the western edge of the canyon, a few hours' drive from Las Vegas rather than near the more famous South Rim visitor areas. It's run by the Hualapai Tribe, and the big draw here is the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends out over the canyon rim so you can look straight down through the floor to the Colorado River below. Because this part of the canyon is managed separately from Grand Canyon National Park, a national park pass does not cover entry, and visiting works a bit differently from the South or North Rim.
Getting around the site relies on a hop-on, hop-off shuttle that links the main viewpoints, so you don't drive your own vehicle between the lookouts. Eagle Point is where the Skywalk is, along with a recreated Native American village. Guano Point is known for its panoramic views where the canyon meets the river, plus a spot for a simple meal. The Skywalk itself is a separate paid add-on, and you can't bring phones or cameras onto the glass bridge, though staff photographers take pictures you can buy afterward. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and sun protection, and plan for strong desert sun and little shade.
Most people come here as a day trip from Las Vegas, which is why Grand Canyon West is often paired with Hoover Dam or Route 66 stops along the way. Bus tours, small-group vans, and helicopter and small-plane flights all serve the area, and some flights land at the canyon floor. If you're deciding between here and the national park's South Rim, this side is closer to Las Vegas and has the Skywalk, while the South Rim offers deeper canyon vistas and more hiking. It's worth checking current shuttle times and Skywalk arrangements before you go, as hours shift with the season.
