About Chicago Architecture Center
The Chicago Architecture Center sits along the Chicago River at 111 E Wacker Drive, and it works as both a museum and the starting point for the city's best-known architecture tours. Chicago is where the modern skyscraper took shape after the fire of 1871, and the Center is built around telling that story. Inside, the main draw is the Chicago Model, a large scale replica of the downtown skyline with hundreds of buildings, used to explain how the city grew upward and why its towers look the way they do. There are also galleries on the history of tall buildings worldwide, from early steel-frame construction to the supertall structures going up today.
Most people combine a visit with one of the guided tours that leave from here, and the river cruise is the signature one. Boats run along all three branches of the Chicago River while a trained docent points out the buildings that line the banks, which is generally reckoned the clearest way to understand the skyline from the outside. The Center also runs walking tours of the Loop and other neighborhoods on foot. The building itself has floor-to-ceiling windows facing the river, so the views are part of the experience even before you head out.
Plan on roughly an hour to see the galleries and the model, more if you take a tour, which is usually booked separately. The location is central, within walking distance of Millennium Park, the Riverwalk, and the main Loop transit stops, so it slots easily into a day of downtown sightseeing. River cruises are weather-dependent and run seasonally, mostly spring through late autumn, so it's worth checking current schedules and booking ahead in summer when boats fill up fast.
