About Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood sits just north of downtown Los Angeles in Universal City, and it works as two things at once: a working film and television studio, and a full theme park built around the movies made there. The park opened to visitors in the 1960s, when Universal started running tram tours past its soundstages and backlots, and that tram tour is still the one ride that separates this place from any other park in California. It rolls through real sets and exterior street facades, past the airplane wreckage from War of the Worlds and the flooded town from Jaws, with a few staged surprises along the way.

Beyond the tour, the park is laid out on two levels connected by a long series of escalators, with the Upper Lot and Lower Lot holding most of the big attractions. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter recreates Hogsmeade and Hogwarts Castle, and other zones cover Super Nintendo World, Jurassic World, Transformers, and The Simpsons. CityWalk, the free promenade just outside the gates, has restaurants, shops, and a cinema, so you can eat and wander there without a park ticket.

Plan on a full day if you want to cover the rides, the tram tour, and a couple of the shows. Weekends and school holidays draw the biggest crowds, so arriving near opening helps, and an Express or front-of-line type pass is worth considering in peak season when wait times climb. The park is a short drive or Metro ride from Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles, and there is paid parking on site for anyone coming by car.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time do I need at Universal Studios Hollywood?
Plan on a full day. Between the Studio Tour, the rides across the Upper and Lower Lots, and at least one or two shows, most visitors use the better part of opening to closing, especially if you want to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World properly.
What is the Studio Tour and is it included?
The Studio Tour is the tram ride through the real backlots and soundstages, past film sets and staged effects. It is included with standard park admission and is one of the park's signature attractions, so it is worth doing early before the queue builds.
Do I need a ticket to visit CityWalk?
No. CityWalk is the open promenade just outside the park gates, with restaurants, shops, and a cinema, and it is free to enter. You only need a park ticket once you pass through the main entrance to the attractions themselves.
Is it worth buying a front-of-line or Express pass?
In peak season, on weekends, and during school holidays, it often is. Wait times for the main rides can get long, and a front-of-line type pass lets you skip the standard queues once per attraction, which can make a big difference on a busy day.
