About The New York Historical
The New York Historical is New York City's oldest museum, founded in 1804, and it doubles as a major research library covering the story of the United States. It sits on Central Park West at 77th Street, on the Upper West Side, directly across from the American Museum of Natural History and a short walk from the park itself. Unlike a single-subject museum, it works on two levels at once: rotating exhibitions on American history and culture downstairs and in the main galleries, and a serious library and research collection that scholars use behind the scenes. The building is a Beaux-Arts landmark, and the collection ranges from Revolutionary-era objects to Tiffany lamps, American paintings, and documents that trace how the country and the city grew.
Two parts of the museum are worth knowing about before you go. The Center for Women's History focuses on the fight for women's suffrage and the role women have played in American life, and it was the first of its kind at a major museum. The DiMenna Children's History Museum, on the lower level, makes the past hands-on for younger visitors, which makes this a reasonable stop for families rather than just history buffs. Between the permanent galleries and whatever temporary exhibition is running, there's usually enough to fill a couple of hours.
Admission is by paid ticket, and the same ticket generally gets you into the current exhibitions along with the permanent collection and the children's museum. Because exhibitions rotate, it's worth checking what's on before you visit so you know what to expect. The location makes it easy to pair with Central Park or the natural history museum next door, and if you're building a day around this stretch of the Upper West Side, this is a quieter, less crowded alternative to the bigger institutions further downtown.
