LEGOLAND® California Resort sits in Carlsbad, up the coast from San Diego, and is built almost entirely around the idea of the plastic brick. The theme park at its center is aimed squarely at families with younger kids, roughly ages 2 to 12, rather than teenagers chasing big thrill rides. Most of the attractions are gentle coasters, interactive dark rides, driving schools where children earn a LEGO driving licence, and hands-on building areas. Miniland USA, the park's signature section, recreates American cities and landmarks out of millions of bricks, and it's the kind of thing adults end up staring at as long as the children do.

Beyond the main park, the resort includes a separate SEA LIFE aquarium and a water park, both of which usually need their own admission or a combined ticket rather than coming bundled with the standard theme-park entry. There are also on-site hotels themed around LEGO sets, if you want to stay inside the resort. Because the different parts are ticketed separately, it's worth deciding in advance whether you want the theme park alone or a combination that adds the water park and aquarium, since that choice changes how much time you'll want to set aside.

The resort runs on a seasonal calendar, so opening days and hours shift through the year, and the water park in particular is weather and season dependent. Carlsbad weather is mild for most of the year, which makes the outdoor layout easy to walk, but shade is limited in parts, so sun protection helps in summer. Plan on a full day for the theme park on its own, and a second day if you're adding the water park or aquarium at a relaxed pace.
