About San Diego Zoo
San Diego Zoo sits in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego, and spreads across about 100 acres of planted canyons and mesas. It opened in 1916 and grew out of animals left over from the Panama-California Exposition, which is partly why the grounds feel as much like a botanical garden as a zoo. Today it holds several thousand animals across hundreds of species, and it was one of the first zoos anywhere to move away from bars and cages toward open, moated enclosures built to resemble natural habitat.
The layout follows the terrain, so paths climb and dip between habitat areas rather than running flat. Highlights people usually plan around include the pandas, the Africa Rocks exhibit with its leopards and penguins, Elephant Odyssey, and the gorilla and orangutan habitats in the tropical sections. Because the site is hilly, the Guided Bus Tour is a genuinely useful way to cover ground and get an overview early, and the Kangaroo Express shuttle lets you hop on and off at stops around the park. The aerial Skyfari gondola crosses the whole zoo from one side to the other and doubles as both transport and a view.
Plan on the better part of a day if you want to see most of it; a half day works if you prioritize a few areas and use the bus. Mornings tend to be cooler and the animals more active, which matters in San Diego's warm months. Comfortable shoes are worth it given the slopes. The zoo is separate from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, which is a different site farther north near Escondido, so check which one your ticket covers before you set out.
