About this tour

Ride the ferry across New York Harbor to Liberty Island for a close look at the Statue of Liberty, then continue to Ellis Island. Your ticket covers round-trip boat service, admission to the Statue of Liberty Museum and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, an audio tour of both islands, and priority entry through the security screening line. Most people set aside three to five hours to walk the grounds, take in the harbor and Manhattan skyline, and learn the story behind the monument. Crown access is limited and must be booked separately.

Good to Know: Access Levels, Ellis Island, Getting There and Hours

The statue's most familiar side is its outline against the sky, but there's more to see up close depending on which ticket you hold. The Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island covers how France and the United States pulled the project off, with interactive displays on the engineering and the original torch on view alongside photos and models. Pedestal tickets let you climb inside the base to an outdoor balcony directly beneath the statue, looking out over the harbor, Ellis Island, and Manhattan. The crown is the highest point you can reach, by way of a tight spiral staircase to small windows near the top; those tickets are scarce and go months in advance. Even without going inside, the island's promenades give you the statue from every angle, with the Manhattan waterfront path being the best spot for photos of the monument against the skyline.

Most ferry tickets also stop at Ellis Island, the immigration station where more than 12 million people entered the country between 1892 and 1954. Inside the restored building, exhibits and personal stories trace those arrivals, and you can walk the Great Hall where immigrants were inspected and processed.

Ferries run to Liberty Island from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey, and subway and bus lines serve both docks, so public transit beats hunting for parking. The monument is generally open 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 15:30, though hours shift by season. It's closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Check the ferry schedule for first and last departures before you go, and dress for the harbor, which runs cooler and windier than the streets.

Important Information

  • Ferry tickets land you on Liberty Island and usually Ellis Island; sightseeing cruises circle the harbor for close views but do not dock.
  • There is no bridge or land route to Liberty Island; the only way over is by ferry from Manhattan or New Jersey.
  • Crown access needs a separate reservation and often sells out months ahead.
  • Between the ferry, security, and both islands, plan on three to five hours.
  • Visiting several NYC attractions? A city pass or combo ticket can save time and money.
  • Guided options add narration and often priority ferry boarding for a more structured visit.
  • Go early: ferries and security lines get busier as the day goes on, especially on weekends and in peak season.
  • Both islands are wheelchair accessible, but crown access uses a narrow staircase not suited to limited mobility.
  • On sightseeing cruises, infants usually sit on a parent's lap unless a separate seat is booked.
  • Security screening is required before boarding the ferry.
  • Large bags and certain items may be restricted at screening.
  • No eating, drinking, or smoking inside the Statue of Liberty.
  • Photography is fine; tripods and commercial filming need permission.
  • No pets on the monument or islands, except service animals.
