About Aquarium de Paris
Aquarium de Paris occupies a hollow in the Chaillot hillside inside the Trocadero gardens, a few steps from the Eiffel Tower. Cut into the slope, the galleries sit below ground level, which keeps daylight out and makes the lit tanks the only thing competing for your attention. The aquarium has run in its present form since 2006 and now keeps around 20,000 fish and invertebrates.
The centrepiece is a three million litre basin where rays and sharks circle past thousands of sardines moving as one shoal, a scene that holds adults as long as it holds children. Alongside it the Medusarium gathers jellyfish in numbers found nowhere else outside Japan, each species lit so its drifting bell reads clearly against the dark. A shallow koi pool lets visitors put a hand in the water, and shows, quizzes and short educational sessions run through the day rather than at one fixed hour.
Allow an hour and a half to two hours to walk the full route, more if you stop for a session or sit through a film. The Trocadero esplanade and the Eiffel Tower are both within a short walk, so the aquarium slots easily into a half day on this side of the Seine.
