Planning Your Visit to the Aquarium de Paris

The Aquarium de Paris is set into the Chaillot hillside at the foot of the Trocadero gardens, in the 16th arrondissement just across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower. Because much of the building is underground, the light stays low and the mood stays calm even on busy days. A full loop through the tanks, from the tropical reef displays and coral to the big shark basin and the Medusarium jellyfish galleries, usually runs about an hour and a half to two hours, a little longer if you stop for a feeding session or a film in the on-site cinema.

Getting there is simple. Take Metro Line 9 to Iena or Line 6 to Trocadero, then walk a few minutes down through the gardens to the entrance at 5 Avenue Albert de Mun. The RER C stop at Pont de l'Alma is also close by. Hours shift with the season and on weekends and French school holidays, so it is worth checking the official site before you go. The galleries are indoors and largely step-free, with elevators and ramps between levels, so weather is not a factor. Dress is casual, and since you will be on your feet a while, comfortable shoes help. Flash photography is not allowed, as it disturbs the animals.

FAQs

Where is the Aquarium de Paris?
It is in the Trocadero gardens in the 16th arrondissement, at 5 Avenue Albert de Mun, a short walk across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.
What sea life will I see?
Thousands of fish and invertebrates, including several shark species, tropical reef fish, coral, and a large jellyfish collection in the Medusarium.
How long does a visit take?
Plan on about an hour and a half to two hours for a full loop, a bit longer if you catch a feeding session or a film.
Is there anything hands-on for kids?
Yes. A supervised touch pool lets children handle rays and small fish, and there are regular feeding sessions, talks, and mermaid shows through the day.
How does the annual pass work?
It gives you unlimited entry to the whole aquarium for a full year, plus 15% off in the shop and restaurant and reduced rates for the guests you bring.
Is the aquarium accessible?
Yes. Most of the galleries are step-free, with elevators and ramps connecting the different levels for strollers and wheelchairs.
Can I take photos?
Photography is fine, but flash is not allowed since it disturbs the animals.
Why is the aquarium underground?
The building is set into the Chaillot hillside below the Trocadero gardens, so much of it sits underground. That keeps the light low and the atmosphere calm even when the galleries are crowded.
What is the Medusarium?
It is the aquarium's dedicated jellyfish section and one of the larger collections of its kind in Europe, with the jellyfish displayed in softly illuminated tanks.
When is the quietest time to go?
As an indoor option it fills up fast on weekends, during French school holidays, and on rainy days, so a weekday visit is generally calmer.
