About Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection
The Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection is a contemporary art museum in the heart of Paris, housing the private collection of businessman Francois Pinault. The building itself is part of the story. It began as a grain exchange and later served as the city's commercial exchange, a circular structure crowned by a glass dome that has stood near the former Les Halles market district for centuries. In 2021 it reopened as a museum after a renovation led by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who inserted a plain concrete cylinder inside the historic rotunda. The contrast between Ando's smooth grey walls and the restored 19th-century dome and painted frieze above is the first thing most visitors notice.
The collection focuses on modern and contemporary art, with works rotated through changing exhibitions rather than a fixed permanent display, so what you see depends on when you visit. The central rotunda under the glass dome is the signature space and is often used for large-scale installations. Spread across several floors, the galleries hold painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation pieces by internationally known artists. Because the programme changes, it's worth checking what's currently on show before you go if there's a particular artist or work you're hoping to catch.
The museum sits at 2 Rue de Viarmes in the 1st arrondissement, a short walk from the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, and the Jardin des Tuileries, which makes it easy to fold into a day in central Paris. Entry is paid, and booking a timed ticket online ahead of your visit helps you avoid waiting at the door, especially on weekends and during popular exhibitions. Most visitors spend somewhere between one and two hours here, longer if a particular show holds your attention.
