About Derinkuyu Underground City

Derinkuyu Underground City is the deepest of Cappadocia's ancient cave cities, cut more than 85 meters down into the soft volcanic rock that shapes so much of this part of central Turkiye. It isn't a single cellar or a couple of rooms but a multi-level warren of tunnels, chambers, and stairways spread across many floors, at one time able to shelter thousands of people along with their food and livestock. People carved out the earliest sections a very long time ago and later communities kept expanding it, using the underground space as a refuge in times of danger and sealing off passages with large round stone doors that rolled across the tunnels.

Down inside, you can walk through what were once living quarters, storage rooms, stables, wine and food stores, and even churches, all connected by narrow passages that open into wider communal spaces. The thing most people remember is that it still breathes. A network of ventilation shafts runs up through the rock, keeping the air moving and reasonably fresh even at the lowest levels, which is part of why the place worked as a long-term hideout rather than just a quick bolt-hole. The tunnels are tight and low in places, so you'll do a fair amount of ducking and stair-climbing.

Derinkuyu sits in the town of the same name, south of the main Cappadocia hubs, and it's a common stop on full-day Green route tours that also take in the Ihlara Valley, Selime Monastery, and a viewpoint over Pigeon Valley. You can also visit on your own with an entry ticket. Wear shoes with grip, bring a light layer since it stays cool underground, and give yourself time to wander rather than rushing the loop. It's not a great fit if you're strongly claustrophobic or have trouble with stairs and stooping.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep is Derinkuyu Underground City?
It's carved more than 85 meters into the volcanic rock, making it the deepest of Cappadocia's underground cities. It spreads across multiple levels of tunnels and rooms, though not every floor is open to visitors.
Do I need a ticket, or is it only visitable on a tour?
Both work. You can buy a paid entry ticket and go in on your own, or visit as part of a guided full-day Green route tour, which usually pairs Derinkuyu with the Ihlara Valley and Selime Monastery. A guide is helpful for the history, but not required to get in.
Is Derinkuyu suitable if I'm claustrophobic or not very mobile?
It can be a challenge. The passages are narrow and low in stretches, there's a lot of stair-climbing, and you'll need to stoop in places. A working ventilation system keeps the air fresh, but if tight spaces or stairs are a real problem for you, it may not be the right site.
What should I bring or wear?
Wear closed shoes with good grip, since the steps and floors can be uneven and slick. Bring a light jacket or layer because it stays cool underground year-round, even in summer. Leaving bulky bags behind makes the tighter tunnels easier to move through.
