About Selime Monastery

Selime Monastery is the largest rock-cut religious complex in Cappadocia, carved into the soft volcanic stone at the northern end of the Ihlara Valley, in the village of Selime near Guzelyurt in Aksaray province. It dates to roughly the Byzantine period, and monks hollowed out an entire monastic settlement inside the rock: a cathedral-sized church with rough columns, a kitchen with a tall chimney, living quarters, stables, and passageways that climb through the cliff. The scale is what surprises most people. This isn't a single carved room but a warren of chambers and stairs running up several levels inside the cone-shaped rock formations.

Getting around inside means real climbing. The paths are uneven, some sections are steep and smooth underfoot, and there are narrow openings and low ceilings, so proper shoes make a big difference and it's easy to lose your footing after rain. Once you're up high, the views back over the valley and the village are wide open. Because Selime Monastery sits at one end of the Ihlara Valley, many day trips pair the two, walking part of the canyon past its rock-cut churches and finishing here, often alongside stops at an underground city like Derinkuyu and a viewpoint over Pigeon Valley.

The site is usually the last stop on southern, or "Green," route tours through Cappadocia, reached by van or bus with a guide. Entry to the monastery is a separate paid ticket and is not always covered by tour prices, so it's worth checking what your booking includes before you arrive. There's little shade on the climb, which matters in summer, and the complex tends to be quieter than the better-known valleys around Goreme, so you can take your time. Allow around 45 minutes to an hour to work through the main chambers and climb to the upper levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a visit to Selime Monastery take?
Around 45 minutes to an hour is enough to see the main church, the kitchen, and climb up through the upper chambers. On a guided day tour it's usually treated as a shorter stop rather than the main event, so pace yourself if you want to reach the higher levels for the views.
Is Selime Monastery a hard climb?
It involves real climbing over uneven, sometimes steep rock, with narrow passages and low ceilings inside. The stone can be smooth and slippery, especially after rain, so wear shoes with good grip. It's manageable for most reasonably mobile visitors, but not ideal if you have trouble with steps or tight spaces.
Is entry to Selime Monastery included in tour prices?
Not always. Several tours that stop here do not cover the entrance, so the monastery is a separate paid ticket you may need to buy on arrival. Check what your specific booking includes before you go so the entry fee doesn't catch you out.
How is Selime Monastery usually combined with other Cappadocia sites?
It sits at the northern end of the Ihlara Valley, so it's commonly paired with a walk through part of that canyon. Southern, or "Green," route day tours typically link it with an underground city such as Derinkuyu and a viewpoint over Pigeon Valley, with Selime Monastery often the final stop of the day.
