About this tour

The Basilica Cistern is a 6th-century underground reservoir beneath Istanbul, built to supply water to the Great Palace of Constantinople. With a skip-the-line ticket you head straight past the ticket-office queues and down into a hall of marble columns, dim lighting, and the two carved Medusa heads set at the base of two pillars. Add a guide or audio guide to fill in the myths and history behind it. A typical visit runs about 30 minutes to an hour, and the cool, quiet air is a welcome break from the streets above.

Highlights

  • Walk among rows of marble columns, each with its own carvings and backstory.
  • See the two carved Medusa heads reused as column bases, still wrapped in legend.
  • Take in the mix of still water, low light, and centuries-old stonework.
  • Learn how the cistern once supplied water to the Great Palace of Constantinople.
  • Step into a cool, quiet space away from the busy streets of Istanbul.

Places You Will Visit

Opening Hours & What to Wear

The Basilica Cistern is open every day in two separate sessions. The daytime session runs from 09:00 to 18:30, then the site closes briefly. It reopens for an evening session from 19:30 to 22:00, when the enhanced lighting gives the space a different feel. Keep in mind that the site is closed between 18:30 and 19:30, and a daytime ticket will not get you in during the evening session.

There's no dress code for the cistern itself, but if you're pairing your visit with nearby Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque, both of which ask for modest dress, it's easier to dress for that from the start. Comfortable clothes and sturdy, supportive shoes are a good idea, since the air is damp and the walkways underground are uneven.
