About this tour

Head underground into one of Istanbul's oldest surprises: a 6th-century Byzantine reservoir hidden beneath the city streets. Your ticket skips the line at the entrance, and a multilingual audio guide walks you past rows of marble columns and the two carved Medusa heads that anchor them. The lighting is low, water still pools on the floor, and the whole place stays cool even on a hot afternoon. Give yourself roughly 30 minutes to an hour to look around at your own pace.

Highlights

  • Walk among rows of marble columns, each carved differently and reused from older buildings
  • See the two Medusa heads set at the base of two columns, still unexplained after centuries
  • Take in the mix of still water, dim light, and stone that gives the cistern its mood
  • Hear how the cistern once fed water to the Great Palace of Constantinople
  • Step out of Istanbul's busy streets into a cool, quiet space underground

Good to Know Before You Visit

The Basilica Cistern is open every day in two separate sessions. The daytime session runs from 09:00 to 18:30, and after a short break the evening session reopens from 19:30 to 22:00 with different, more dramatic lighting. The site closes between 18:30 and 19:30, and a daytime ticket does not get you into the evening session, so check which one you're booking.

There's no dress code for the cistern itself, but if you're pairing it with the nearby Hagia Sophia or Blue Mosque, both call for modest dress, so plan your outfit around that. Inside, the floors are damp and uneven, so comfortable shoes with good grip make the walk a lot easier.
