About New York Botanical Garden
The New York Botanical Garden spreads across roughly 250 acres in the Bronx, making it one of the largest botanical gardens in the United States. It was founded in 1891, and the grounds still include 50 acres of old-growth forest, the last remnant of the woodland that once covered all of New York City. Alongside that natural landscape sit curated gardens, a working research institution, and a herbarium holding millions of plant specimens, so the place functions as much as a scientific center as a public park.
The centerpiece for most visitors is the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a Victorian-style glasshouse completed in 1902 that holds tropical and desert plants under its domes year-round. Elsewhere you can walk the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, the Native Plant Garden, the rock garden, and the forest trails that follow the Bronx River. The planting changes a lot with the seasons: cherry blossoms and tulips in spring, roses in early summer, and the long-running Holiday Train Show in the conservatory over the winter months, when model trains run through landmarks built from bark, seeds, and other plant material.
The garden is in the Bronx, not Manhattan, but it's easy to reach by Metro-North from Grand Central to the Botanical Garden stop, or by subway and a short walk. Plan on at least two to three hours, more if you want to cover the forest and the far gardens on foot. Paid admission applies, and an all-garden ticket usually covers the conservatory and any special exhibitions, which is worth checking when you book since some seasonal shows need a timed entry. Decent walking shoes help, as the grounds are large and spread out.
