Alcatraz Tickets with Ferry and Audio Guide
About this tour
Cross San Francisco Bay by ferry from Pier 33 to Alcatraz, the island prison that once held Al Capone. Your ticket covers the round-trip boat ride and the award-winning "Doing Time" cellhouse audio guide, narrated by people who actually lived and worked there. Walk the cellblocks at your own pace, then head outside to the recreation yard, the gardens, and the island's bird colonies. How the Alcatraz Visit Works and Getting There
The trip starts at Pier 33 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, the only place ferries to Alcatraz leave from. The crossing runs regularly, with departures roughly every 30 to 40 minutes for both day and night tours. Your ticket time is for the outbound boat; once you're on the island you can catch any return ferry, so most people spend two to three hours there and about half a day in total.
Getting to Pier 33 is easiest by public transit, with several Muni bus lines and the F-line streetcar stopping nearby. If you drive, there are parking garages close by, though space fills up in peak season. The island is open year-round except Christmas, New Year's Day, and Thanksgiving. Visiting hours are 09:00 to 18:30 Sunday and Monday, and 09:00 to 21:30 Tuesday through Saturday. The first ferry usually leaves around 08:20 and the last outbound departure is mid-afternoon, earlier in winter, with night tours running on select evenings.
