About Whipsnade Zoo
Whipsnade Zoo sits in the Chiltern Hills near Dunstable in Bedfordshire, a short drive north of London, and it is one of the largest zoos in the UK by land area. Run by the Zoological Society of London, the same organisation behind the smaller ZSL London Zoo in Regent's Park, Whipsnade was opened in 1931 as a countryside counterpart where animals could be kept in far larger, more open enclosures. Because of all that space, the layout feels less like a traditional city zoo and more like a park you move through, with wide paddocks, woodland and long walking routes between areas.
The collection covers big cats, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, lemurs, primates and a lot more, along with the walkthrough enclosures and daily keeper talks and feeds that tend to draw crowds. One thing worth knowing: the site is big enough that many visitors bring their own car and drive between sections, and there is also a steam railway, the Jumbo Express, that runs through part of the Asia area past some of the larger grazing animals. Comfortable shoes matter here more than at most zoos, since covering the whole place on foot means a fair amount of walking across uneven, often hilly ground.
Plan for the better part of a day if you want to see most of it at a relaxed pace. Entry is paid and tickets are usually cheaper when booked online in advance rather than at the gate, and timed-entry arrangements can apply in busier periods, so it is worth checking the current booking setup before you travel. The zoo sits a little way out from Dunstable itself, so most people arrive by car; if you are coming from London without one, check train and onward bus connections ahead of time, as public transport to the gate is limited.
