About Ihlara Valley
Ihlara Valley is a deep river canyon on the western edge of Cappadocia, in the Aksaray area near the village of Guzelyurt. Cut over time by the Melendiz River, the gorge runs for roughly 14 kilometers, with sheer volcanic walls rising well over a hundred meters in places. What sets it apart from Cappadocia's more famous fairy-chimney landscapes is the greenery: the river keeps the canyon floor shaded and lined with trees, so a walk here feels cooler and more sheltered than the open plateaus above.
The valley was a monastic settlement in the Byzantine period, and the cliffs are dotted with rock-cut churches carved straight into the soft stone. Many still hold fragments of frescoes, and the painted interiors are the main reason the site draws people who have already seen the rest of the region. Most walking routes start near the village of Ihlara, where a long staircase drops down into the gorge, and follow the river toward Belisirma, a small village on the canyon floor where several tours stop for lunch. Further along the western route sits Selime Monastery, a huge cliffside complex often paired with the valley on the same day.
The valley is usually visited as part of a full-day guided trip along Cappadocia's Green Tour route, which tends to combine it with the Derinkuyu Underground City and a viewpoint over Pigeon Valley. Walking a stretch of the canyon rather than the full length is the norm on these tours, so you get the churches and the river scenery without committing to the entire 14 kilometers. Wear proper walking shoes, the path is uneven and can be muddy near the water, and bring layers, since it stays noticeably cooler down in the shade even on hot days. Entry to the valley is a paid ticket, though on most guided tours it is handled for you.
