About Ephesus Ancient City

Ephesus Ancient City is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean, spread across a hillside near Selcuk in Izmir province on Turkiye's Aegean coast. It began as a Greek settlement and grew into one of the most important cities of the Roman province of Asia, with a population that ran into the tens of thousands at its height. What you walk through today is a Greco-Roman city laid out along marble streets, still lined with columns, foundations, and public buildings that give a real sense of how the place once worked.

The obvious landmark is the Library of Celsus, its two-story facade rebuilt from original stone and easily the most photographed spot on the site. From there the marble street runs down past shops and civic buildings to the Great Theatre, a huge amphitheatre cut into the hillside that once seated a crowd in the thousands and still hosts the occasional event. The Terrace Houses, a separately ticketed covered section, show where wealthy families lived, with mosaics and painted walls preserved under a modern roof. The Temple of Artemis, once counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, stood nearby, though little of it remains standing now beyond a single reconstructed column and scattered foundations a short distance from the main site.

There's very little shade among the ruins, so a hat, water, and decent shoes for uneven marble and stone are worth having, especially in summer. Ephesus has two entrances, the upper (Magnesia) gate and the lower gate, and many visitors start at the top and walk downhill. Booking a ticket online in advance and using a skip-the-line option saves time at the entrance queue in peak season, and an audio guide lets you go at your own pace. Most visits run a couple of hours, longer if you add the Terrace Houses. The site pairs well with the nearby town of Selcuk and the Basilica of St. John if you have a full day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time should I plan for Ephesus Ancient City?
Around two to three hours covers the main street, the Library of Celsus, and the Great Theatre at a comfortable pace. Add another 30 to 45 minutes if you're also visiting the Terrace Houses, and a bit more if you walk over to the Temple of Artemis site nearby.
Are the Terrace Houses included in the standard ticket?
No, the Terrace Houses are a separately ticketed covered area within the site and require paid entry on top of the main admission. They're not needed to see the marble streets, the library, or the theatre, but the preserved mosaics and wall paintings make them a popular add-on.
Which entrance should I use, and is there much walking?
Ephesus has an upper gate and a lower gate, and the site runs downhill between them. Many people start at the upper gate and walk down so the route is mostly downhill. Expect uneven marble and stone throughout and very little shade, so bring water, a hat, and sturdy shoes, especially in summer.
Is it worth booking a skip-the-line ticket in advance?
Yes, particularly between April and October when Ephesus gets busy and the walk-up entrance queue can build up. Booking online in advance and choosing a skip-the-line option gets you past the entrance line, and a self-guided audio guide lets you explore at your own pace.
