About Hierapolis Ancient City

Hierapolis Ancient City sits directly above the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale in Denizli province, southwestern Turkiye. It was a Greco-Roman spa town, founded in the 2nd century BC and later a thriving Roman city, drawing people who came to bathe in the same mineral-rich thermal water that formed the terraces below. Today you walk through the ruins of that city on the same clifftop, along old streets lined with gates, bath complexes, and the remains of temples, with the calcium-white pools spilling down the hillside just beyond.

The Roman theater is the standout. Cut into the slope above the city, it kept much of its stone seating and its ornate stage wall, and the view out over the plain from the upper rows is worth the climb. Hierapolis also holds one of the largest ancient cemeteries in the region, a sprawling necropolis of tombs and sarcophagi lining the roads out of town. The site and the terraces share one entrance and one paid ticket, so visiting Hierapolis and walking barefoot across the warm travertine pools of Pamukkale is really one trip, not two. Wear or carry something you don't mind getting wet if you plan to wade.

Hierapolis is a common day trip. Full-day tours run from Antalya, which is a long drive each way, and shorter ones from Denizli or Pamukkale town, usually with hotel pickup, a guide, lunch, and entrance fees bundled in. If you'd rather go at your own pace, skip-the-line and audio-guide tickets are sold for the site, letting you wander the streets, baths, and theater on your own schedule. There's a lot of open ground and very little shade, so bring water, sun cover, and shoes you can walk distances in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pamukkale included with a Hierapolis Ancient City ticket?
Yes. Hierapolis and the Pamukkale travertine terraces share the same site and the same entrance, so one paid ticket covers both. You can walk the ancient ruins and cross the warm mineral pools on the same visit.
Can I visit Hierapolis Ancient City as a day trip?
Yes, it's one of the most popular day-trip destinations in the region. Tours run from Denizli and Pamukkale town with hotel pickup, and longer full-day trips run from Antalya, though the drive from there is several hours each way.
What's worth seeing at Hierapolis besides the terraces?
The Roman theater is the main draw, with well-preserved stone seating and a decorated stage wall set into the hillside above the city. Hierapolis also has an extensive necropolis, one of the largest ancient cemeteries in the region, plus old streets, gates, and bath ruins.
What should I bring or wear?
The site is large, open, and short on shade, so bring water and sun protection and wear comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to wade across the travertine pools, you'll need to go barefoot on the terraces, so pack something you don't mind getting wet.
