About Pamukkale Travertines

Pamukkale Travertines are a series of bright white terraces stepping down a hillside in southwestern Turkiye, near the town of Pamukkale in Denizli province. The name means "cotton castle" in Turkish, and the terraces form as mineral-rich thermal water flows out of the ground and cools, leaving behind deposits of white calcium carbonate that have built up over thousands of years. From a distance the whole slope can look like a frozen waterfall or a bank of snow. The pools hold warm, shallow water, and visitors walk across the terraces barefoot, since shoes aren't allowed on the travertines themselves to keep the surface from wearing down.

Right above the terraces sits Hierapolis, an ancient Greco-Roman spa city that grew up around the same thermal springs. The two share a single site, so a ticket into Pamukkale also gets you into the ruins. You can wander the old streets and gates, see one of the largest ancient cemeteries in the region, and climb up to the Roman theater set into the cliff, which looks out over the terraces and the plain below. There's also a thermal pool on the grounds where you can swim among fragments of old columns, though that usually needs a separate ticket.

Most people come as a day trip, and the site is a common full-day tour from Antalya or a shorter one from Denizli, both of which typically bundle transport, a guide, and entrance fees. If you're arriving on your own, entry is paid, and skip-the-line and audio-guide tickets are both available. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the walk up and around Hierapolis, and bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and water, since there's little shade on the open terraces. The area is also known for sunrise hot air balloon flights that pass over the white slopes and the ruins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to take my shoes off on the terraces?
The white travertine surface is soft and wears down easily, so shoes aren't allowed on the terraces themselves. You walk across the warm, shallow pools barefoot. Carry your shoes with you and put them back on for the rest of the site, including the walk around Hierapolis.
Is Hierapolis included with a Pamukkale Travertines ticket?
Yes. Pamukkale Travertines and the ancient city of Hierapolis share a single site, so paid entry covers both. You can walk the terraces and then explore the old streets, gates, and the Roman theater above the cliffs on the same ticket. The separate thermal swimming pool on the grounds usually needs its own ticket.
How do I get to Pamukkale Travertines?
The site is near Pamukkale town in Denizli province. Many visitors come on a full-day tour from Antalya or a shorter trip from Denizli, both of which generally include round-trip transport, a guide, and entrance fees. If you're going independently, Denizli is the nearest transport hub and the terraces are a short ride from there.
What should I bring and wear for a visit?
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the walking around Hierapolis, since you'll be on your feet on uneven ground. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and water, as the open terraces have very little shade. If you plan to go in the thermal pool or the terrace water, pack swimwear and a towel.
