Opening Hours and What to Wear

The Basilica Cistern is open every day, but it runs in two separate sessions and a daytime ticket does not cover the evening one. The daytime session is 09:00 to 18:30. The site then closes from 18:30 to 19:30, and reopens for an evening Night Shift session from 19:30 to 22:00, when extra lighting gives the space a different mood. If you want the evening visit, book that ticket specifically.

There's no dress code for the cistern itself. That said, if you're pairing it with nearby Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque, both of which ask for modest dress, plan your outfit around that. Inside the cistern it's damp and the floors are uneven, so wear comfortable clothes and supportive shoes.
