About Top of The Rock

Top of The Rock is the observation deck complex atop 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the 70-story Art Deco skyscraper at the heart of the Rockefeller Center development in Midtown Manhattan. The building opened in 1933 as part of the wider Rockefeller Center project, and the observation decks spread across three levels near the top of the tower. What sets the place apart from other New York City viewpoints is the angle: because it faces the Empire State Building head-on, you get that famous downtown skyline with the Empire State in the frame, plus a clear north-facing look over the full spread of Central Park, which is hard to see from viewpoints further downtown.

The upper decks are partly open-air, with glass safety panels lowered enough to keep photos clear of reflections and railings. From up here Manhattan reads as a grid, with the Hudson and East Rivers on either side and, on a clear day, sightlines that reach well beyond the island. Timed-entry tickets are the norm, so you pick a slot when you book, and sunset windows sell out first because that is when you get daylight, the golden hour, and the lit-up city all in one visit. Elevators run to the top and the ride itself is quick.

Allow around an hour to ninety minutes if you want to move between the levels without rushing, longer around sunset when the upper deck gets busy. The entrance sits within Rockefeller Center, so it pairs naturally with a walk through the plaza, the shops and, in winter, the ice rink below. Dress a little warmer than street level, since the open decks catch the wind even on mild days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you see from Top of The Rock?
The main draws are the head-on view of the Empire State Building against the downtown skyline and the open sweep of Central Park to the north. On a clear day you also see both rivers framing Manhattan and long sightlines out past the island.
How much time should I plan for a visit?
About an hour to ninety minutes is comfortable for moving between the observation levels and taking photos. Plan on the longer end if you go around sunset, when the upper deck is at its busiest.
Do I need to book a time slot in advance?
Yes, tickets are usually timed-entry, so you choose a specific slot when you book. Sunset slots go first because they combine daylight, golden hour and the illuminated city, so book those well ahead.
How is Top of The Rock different from the Empire State Building observation deck?
The biggest difference is the view itself. From Top of The Rock you look directly at the Empire State Building, which you cannot do from inside that building, and you get a much clearer overhead view of Central Park.
