What to Expect at Top of the Rock
Your visit works up through three observation levels at the top of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, each giving a slightly different angle on the city. It starts in the Welcome Gallery, where photos and exhibits lay out the history of Rockefeller Center and its observation deck. From there, elevators carry you up fast. The indoor level has The Weather Room Café and Bar, with floor-to-ceiling windows over Manhattan if you want to take in the view with a drink in hand.
The 67th floor mixes indoor viewing areas with outdoor terraces, the 69th floor opens onto open-air terraces you can circle for different angles, and the 70th floor is the top open-air deck, with the full 360-degree sweep over Central Park, the Empire State Building, and the rest of the skyline. The upper decks are partly open to the air with lowered glass panels, so photos come out clear of reflections and railings. Plan on about one to two hours to move between levels without rushing, a bit longer near sunset when the top deck fills up. Dress slightly warmer than street level, since the open decks catch the wind even on mild days.
Top of the Rock is open daily from 08:00 to 23:00, with last entry at 22:10, though hours can shift slightly around holidays and special events, so check the latest schedule before you go. The entrance is at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. By subway, take the B, D, F, or M train to the 47-50th Streets, Rockefeller Center station, a short walk from the door.
