About Uludag
Uludag is the mountain that rises above Bursa in northwestern Turkiye, and locals still call it by its old name, Mount Olympos. It's the tallest peak in the region, high enough to hold snow well into spring, which is why it grew into one of the country's best-known winter-sports areas. In the colder months the upper slopes fill with skiers and snowboarders, and the hotel cluster near the top runs on winter tourism. Outside ski season the mountain shifts character entirely, with cool air, pine forest, and walking trails that draw people up from the summer heat of the lowlands.
Most visitors reach the higher elevations by cable car from Bursa, a ride that climbs steadily above the city and the plain below. The trip is a common day out from Istanbul, which sits roughly two hours away, and Uludag usually gets paired with Bursa itself, an early Ottoman capital with a lot of history packed close together. A typical day combines time on the mountain with stops in the city, including the Green Mosque and Green Mausoleum, the tiled covered bazaar known for silk, and the Inkaya plane tree, an enormous plane thought to be around 600 years old.
What you get out of Uludag depends heavily on when you go. Winter is for snow and the resort area; late spring through autumn is for clear views, cooler temperatures, and walking. The weather at the summit can differ sharply from Bursa down below, so a warm layer is sensible even on a mild day in the city. If you're coming as part of a guided trip, transport and the cable car are often handled for you, which takes the hassle out of the mountain roads and parking.
