What to See and How to Plan Your Visit

The museum sits largely below ground, following the descent to bedrock where the towers once stood. Inside, the Historical Exhibition walks you through the events of September 11, 2001, and the 1993 bombing, while the Memorial Exhibition is devoted to the people who were killed. You'll see large structural pieces of the World Trade Center, the slurry wall that held back the Hudson River, and the Last Column, which was removed at the close of the recovery effort and now stands in Foundation Hall. The Survivor Staircase, used by many to get out of the complex that day, is also on display, alongside personal belongings, photographs, news footage, and audio recordings. It's a quiet, emotionally heavy place, so give yourself room to take it at your own pace.

Plan on about 2 to 3 hours to do the memorial and museum justice. Opening hours shift through the year, so check the official site before you go, and aim to arrive around 30 minutes ahead of your timed entry since security screening at the museum entrance works much like an airport. Large bags and luggage aren't permitted and there's no storage on site. There's no formal dress code, but given the solemn nature of the place, dressing respectfully and wearing comfortable shoes for a fair amount of walking is the way to go. To get here, take the A, C, J, or Z train to Fulton Street or the 1 train to WTC Cortlandt, both a short walk from the World Trade Center site at 180 Greenwich Street.
