Visiting the 9/11 Memorial & Museum: What to Expect and Good to Know

Your visit splits into two parts. The outdoor memorial plaza is open-air and free to walk through, centered on two large reflecting pools that sit within the footprints of the North and South Towers, each ringed by bronze parapets inscribed with the names of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the 2001 attacks and the 1993 bombing. The plaza is planted with hundreds of trees, among them the Survivor Tree. The museum itself is built largely below ground, descending to the bedrock where the towers stood, and holds remnants of the buildings, the surviving slurry wall, the Last Column, and a large collection of personal artifacts, recorded testimony, and photographs. Plan on roughly 2 to 3 hours to take it all in.

Getting here is easy on public transit: take the A, C, J, or Z train to Fulton Street, or the 1 train to WTC Cortlandt, then walk the short distance to the World Trade Center site. Security screening at the museum entrance works much like an airport, so arrive about 30 minutes before your timed entry. Large bags and luggage aren't allowed and there's no storage, so travel light. Opening hours shift through the year, so check the official site before you go. There's no formal dress code, but given the solemn nature of the place, dress respectfully and wear comfortable shoes, since you'll be on your feet a fair amount.
