About Kadikoy
Kadikoy sits on the Asian side of Istanbul, directly across the water from the old city and the historic peninsula. It's a neighborhood rather than a single monument, and that's most of the appeal: a dense grid of streets packed with cafes, bookshops, record stores, fish restaurants, and one of the city's best fresh produce markets. For a long time it was mainly where locals lived, ate, and went out, which is exactly why visitors now come. The atmosphere feels more everyday and less polished than Sultanahmet, and prices at street level tend to reflect that too.
The reason most people end up here is the ferry. Boats cross the Bosphorus from Eminonu and Karakoy on the European side, and the ride itself is one of the cheapest and best ways to see the water, the skyline, and the passing traffic of tankers and smaller ferries. On arrival, the main market area around Kadikoy Carsi is a short walk from the terminal. This is where you'll find pickle shops, spice sellers, coffee roasters, and stalls selling everything from olives to Turkish delight, mostly clustered on and around the pedestrian lanes. It's a walking neighborhood, so comfortable shoes matter more than a plan.
Moda, a quieter district just south of the center, is worth the extra stroll for its seafront promenade and tea gardens looking back toward the sea. If you're using Kadikoy as a base for a wider day out, it connects easily to the rest of the Asian side, and the ferries run frequently enough that you rarely wait long. Many food and walking tours of Istanbul include a stop here, but the area is just as easy to explore on your own with a rough sense of where the market and the waterfront are.
